Tong Kee's Egg Tart 棠记兄弟饼家

I still remember the stall selling Tong Kee's Egg Tart in front of Lai Foong, Jalan Tun H.S.Lee, that’s the place I used to stop by after a tuition class to help myself to some lovely Tong Kee's Egg Tarts. Today, Tong Kee’s outlet is like mushroom growth, opens one after another. Not only that, the price has also been raised from less than RM 1 to RM1.30 per piece. Even then, it has never left me off visiting it simply because of its unbeatable wobbly egg filling and the lardy puff pastry which is so flaky that scarcely be found elsewhere. The outlet in Sri Petaling is the most convenient one for me. Other than the original lardy version, Tong Kee also pays heed to health conscious consumers by introducing the buttery version which I think is less sellable. Apart from the main stream, Tong Kee is also getting fair orders for festive cookies, wedding pastry (嫁女饼) and Moon Cake.Brother in law has teeth for this Twister (RM4.50) that resembles a “rope”. Its crunchy texture is pretty much tastier than those ultra-hard sugar coated type which you may find in Pasar Malam (Night Market). There are some customers just like us, love to relish the hot steamy tarts delivered straight from kitchen in this comfy red couch. ;-)(HQ) Tel: 03-2142 9958

Portuguese Tart from Margaret's Cafe e Nata

Needless to say, Portuguese style egg tart is a MUST EAT goodie of Macau, the focal point is, “Where on earth the BEST Portuguese egg tart can be found!?”

According to the research we made, 1st Macanese Portuguese style egg tart was created by Andrew Stow, an English gentleman who founded Lord Stow’s Bakery. During a trip to Portugal in late-80’s, he was inspired by the Pasteis de Nata ,he later developed his very own version of Poturguese style egg tart base on numerous experimentation he had performed with his unique English's touch. His creation attracted tens of thousands foodies and his little bakery at Coloane became famous. Since then, franchises established one after another in Japan, the Philippines, Thailand and Taiwan.

As Coloane was way too far from our hotel, we regret we did not make it to sample this most original Macanese-Portuguese style egg tart. We however went for Margaret's Cafe e Nata run by Andrew's ex-wife near Hotel Sintra, which was said serving equally good Portuguese tart.

Portuguese style egg tart features slightly charred caramel on the top surface of egg custard filling. Cappuccino & mocha served along with the tarts. Buttery pastry combined with rich creamy filling, Margaret’s egg tart is certainly the best among those I have sampled so far.

Seremban Asia Siew Pow 芙蓉亚洲烧包

Seremban renowns for Siew Pow, as being a Mantin born, friends often come to me, seeking my advice on where to buy the best Seremban Siew Pow (芙蓉烧包). There are countable Siew Pow bakeries in Seremban town, all I can say is, different people are having different preference. As for myself, I usually purchase from Kedai Siew Pau Asia(亚洲烧包).

Why Asia? Just for 3 simple reasons
1.) Strategic place
Restoran Yi Poh in Temiang is one of the happening eatery during weekends while Asia nestled just opposite to it. We surely drop by Asia for some take away pastry each time after a good breakfast at Yi Poh.
2.) Freshly baked
This is certainly a good attraction. Whenever we step into the shop, we could smell the distinctive aroma of the freshly baked pastry, so appetising that we are prone to buy more and more....

3.) Variety
Besides the Siew Pow, they also sell other products like tart, bun, curry puff, kaya puff & etc. One of the brilliant marketing tactic --> product diversification
The below egg & butter base mini cake is also another salable item of Asia。 This is also our "sure buy" item. Sold for RM2 per pack.

A close up shot of the mini cake
Of course, the FOCUS is still on the Seremban SIEW POW with crisp brown crust and ample filling...For me, the pork one is always more authentic! ;-P
It's so good to be eaten warm! Yumm...yummmm....

If you are first timer to this place, go to have a bowl of Yi Poh dried noodles then walk across the road to Asia to get some Siew Pow for take away, this is how I kill 2 birds with just 1 stone! ;-)
